TIPS & TECHNIQUES: Listening to show you C.A.R.E.
First steps to listening for results
First you must show you C.A.R.E.
Concentrate
- Good listeners pay attention to much more than just the words
- Listen and look for:
- Mood of the person-what are their feelings?
- Vocal speed
- Vocal volume
- Key words or phrases
- Posture
Ask yourself two questions
- How is the person feeling?
- What is the main idea being communicated?
Respond to the feelings
- Feed back the feelings; say what you believe they are feeling, especially when people have strong feelings about something. For instance: "Sounds like you are frustrated."
Explain what you heard
- Paraphrase: explain the main idea you heard
