TIPS & TECHNIQUES: Using key messages for improved results when talking
Key messages
A key message puts a topic into perspective. Keep it simple 8-12 words that are easy to say and remember. Using a key message when beginning to talk about a subject makes it easier for another person to understand your position on the topic.
To create a key message, first write a draft sentence that summarizes your viewpoint on a subject. Dont worry about making this first draft be exactly right. The purpose of a draft is just to get information on paper. Perfecting the message is done during the editing stage.
To edit, first take out all the words you can without changing the meaning. You will find it easy to eliminate about half or more of the words in the draft. Then make long words short ones. Keep working on the message in this way until it is about 8-12 words.
Here is how to use a key message when talking to others. First say the message.
Key message
Why
Tell why the message is true. Write your points here:
Tell a story
Use an example or story to illustrate your point. Storytelling helps people remember and makes the message more understandable and believable.
Restate your key message
Repeating key messages helps people to remember them.
