Controlling nonverbal communication
When you speak, remember S.P.E.A.K.
The old saying, "It’s not what you say, it’s how you say it" is well known, but not much followed by people giving presentations. You will appear much more confident when you speak if you remember these five tips related to "how you say it." The word SPEAK will help you remember the five tips.
Smile
- People who are anxious tend to look stern
- People who are confident look pleasant
- When you smile, others smile back — and you tend to feel good when you are smiling
Posture
- Stand and sit erect with shoulders back and chin up
Eye contact
- If you try to look at everyone, you look at no one
- Speak to one person at a time — make contact — look at them for 3-5 seconds, then look at another individual
Animation
- Lively manner, energetic, enthusiastic
- Voice variation in pitch and volume
- Always show your energy and excitement
- If you want others to be excited about your ideas, you must be enthusiastic first
Kinetics
- Having to do with motion
- Use gestures and body movement as a form of communication
- Use symmetrical, two-handed gestures at shoulder height
